All
individuals possess a distinct combination of relative
strengths and abilities. Those abilities that fall within
the cognitive domain determine one’s intellectual ability or
intelligence. Often it is necessary and helpful to obtain a
measure of an individual’s intelligence. Such measures are
often useful tools to help individuals decide appropriate
post-secondary training options. The most widespread test
of intelligence that is used in North America is the
Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Forth Edition (WISC-IV)
and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Third Edition
(WAIS-III). Each measures a wide variety of cognitive
abilities and is used to determine an individual’s unique
learning profile as well as overall intellectual ability.
